Cancer Care
Breast Cancer Detection Centers (BCDC)

St. Luke's Breast Cancer Detection Centers (BCDC) have been serving women with low-cost mammography, breast examination, and education since 1973. Our convenient locations and Mobile Mammography Coach create easy access to breast screening technology that aids in the early detection of breast cancer.

All BCDC mammography images are automatically processed by a computer-aided detection system that assists radiologists by digitizing and analyzing mammograms for suspicious areas that may indicate cancer. Studies have shown that this system may help detect up to 20 percent more breast cancers in their earliest, most treatable stage.

Most of St. Luke’s BCDC sites feature the latest in breast screening technology: Full field digital mammography. Soon, all our sites will feature this state-of-the-art equipment.

Digital Mammography
Digital mammography uses computers and specially designed digital detectors to produce an image that can be displayed on a high-resolution computer monitor, transmitted, and stored just like computer files. From a patient’s point of view, having a digital mammogram is very much like having a conventional screen-film mammogram. Unlike film-based mammography, however, digital mammograms produce images that appear on the technologist’s monitor in a matter of seconds.

The radiologist reviews these electronic images of the breast on high-resolution monitors. He or she can adjust the brightness, change contrast, and zoom in for close-ups of specific areas of interest. Being able to manipulate images is one of the main benefits of digital technology.

Digital mammography greatly reduces the need for retakes due to over or under exposure. This can save additional time and reduce patient exposure to x-rays. Because they are electronic, digital mammography images can be easily stored, copied without any loss of information, and quickly transmitted and received in a streamlined manner, eliminating dependence on only one set of “original” films.
